This is Alexa. She is one of our Sanctuary dogs. You can see from the look on her face and her body language that she is really, REALLY shy!
The photos of Alexa were taken on her first night at the farm. Jay and Ricky had her in their bed and you can tell from her expression and body language that she was not all that happy to be there! She hid under the pillow and stayed there all through the night and into the next morning, until they took her out to her yard!
Pup Squad takes in dogs, works with them, vets them and then moves them on to waiting families. Both of Alexa’s siblings quickly got over their fear of people and were placed in homes almost immediately. But Alexa was the tough one. She was terribly afraid of people, and no matter what Kathy and the wonderful ladies at Pup Squad did, Alexa did not shed her fear.
This presented a problem for Pup Squad. Traditional rescues focus on finding new homes for adoptable dogs. When a dog like Alexa comes along, it gums up the works, taking up space that other, adoptable dogs could use. One unadoptable dog can prevent many others from having an opportunity to find a family.
Fortunately, fearful (or feral) dogs like Alexa are usually not afraid of other dogs. They just do not trust humans. (Who can blame them, really?) So Pup Squad asked if Alexa could come to Smiling Dog Farms where she could live out her life with other dogs and not have to deal much with people. Smiling Dog Farms happily agreed to take her on
Coincidently, Smiling Dog Farms had five beautiful black Lab puppies that had been found discarded in a cardboard box like so much rubbish. The couple that found the pups scooped them up and took them home. They had contacted several rescues but had been told that none had room for the puppies. Then they contacted Smiling Dog Farms. Although Smiling Dog Farms is primarily a Sanctuary, they agreed to take the puppies and do their best to find homes for them.
When Pup Squad emailed Smiling Dog Farms asking if they could make room for Alexa, Jay and Ricky told them about the five puppies. Pup Squad came through for these very adoptable Lab pups and went to work to find homes for them! Without Kathy and her team's intervention, they might have lived at the farm until they were collecting Social Security!
And precious Alexa, who has no love for humans, gets to live out her days at the
farm with a doggy friend, unmolested by people, happily playing in her yard and enjoying
her life … sans-
It just doesn't get any better than that!
The story of how Alexa came to Smiling Dog Farms is a story of Rescue at it’s Best!
